Darwin is hosting the 2023 Aussie Nash Hash over 12 – 14 May 2023.

Runs

On your rego form you’ll be asked what type of run(s) you’ll be doing. Here’s a bit of a guide on the distances:

  • Short walk – up to 4km
  • Short run – 4-6km
  • Medium run – 8-10km
  • Long run – 10-12km
  • Ball breaker – up to 25km
  • Bike ride – TBC
  • Surprise novelty “run” – Be surprised (i.e. we have no idea)

TNH23 Hub

We considered a number of venues in & around Darwin, but the Amphitheatre was always our first preference because:

  • It’s private, secure & has lots of open-air space
  • It’s an easy walk/hash, e-scooter ride or approx $10 Uber from anywhere in the Darwin CBD
  • We can choose our beer (& other beverage) suppliers – including Darwin brewery, One Mile
  • We can work with well-known local food trucks & community organisations to provide meals on-site – including your chance to embrace the Darwin laksa recovery breakfast
  • We are in charge of recruiting, employing & debriefing security folks & bar staff
  • It’s a gorgeous natural amphitheatre for our live music entertainment & for putting Hashers on ice

Hash pub

Our Hash Pub is the Frontier Hotel on the edge of the city near the Amphitheatre.

Darwin accommodation

TNH23 is at the start of the top end’s tourist season – book your accommodation early to beat the hordes heading north.

The TNH23 Hub is the Frontier Hotel, with accommodation in the hotel above the pub.

We will also have access to Lizards Bar in Mitchell Street as a secondary Hash Pub and the hotel above this pub, H on Mitchell, has some apartment rooms.

Alatai Holiday Apartments are 1.2km from the Hash Venue (Botanic Gardens) and 1.4km to the CBD, with affordable 3 star studio units, 2 and 3 bedroom fully self-contained apartments. Vitina Studio Motel is also near the Hash venue & a short stroll or scooter ride into the CBD.

If you’re coming with a caravan, camperhome etc we suggest you book a site at one of the parks along Stuart Highway to make shuttle bus runs quicker and more direct – Discovery Park – Darwin, Big4 Hidden Valley, Robbie Robbins Reserve or Darwin Free Spirit.

Planning your visit

Things to see & do in Darwin – and the Top End – start ramping up at the start of May, so book accomodation, tours, event tickets, camp sites, etc early.

Other stuff to consider for your visit to Darwin

If you love Australian live music, Red Hot Summer Tour, with Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, Missing Higgins & supporting acts is happening at the TNH23 venue on the Saturday prior to TNH23 & the Territory’s biggest annual music festival, BASS in the grass is at the nearby Mindil Beach on the Saturday after TNH23. Details & ticket sales are on their website. If you’re here 2 weeks prior to TNH23, Seaside Sounds music festival is on at the Darwin Ski Club (a TNH23 sponsor) on 29 April – over our May Day long weekend.

If you’re planning a longer stay in Darwin & the Territory sign up for the city’s iconic City2Surf run on 4 June.

Local Hasher, Killer, runs great guided bushwalks, with special 5 & 6 day options in Kakadu for Hashers attending TNH23. Full details on his website.

You might want to follow the Darwin Ski Club’s Facebook page – they’re a TNH23 sponsor & host everything from Hashers to comedy, live music & movies. They offer very chilled & friendly dining & drinks, & are arguably one of the best place in Darwin for a sunset session. Or a recovery breakfast. If you’re staying for a while in Darwin, the Ski Club are also hosting the Top End Gin Festival on 29 May.

Drop into the Museum & Art Gallery Northern Territory (MAGNT) (free entry) across the road from the Darwin Ski Club to see local history, experience Cyclone Tracy’s hit on Darwin in 1974 and catch the touring Century of the Archibald exhibition.

The Mindil Beach market is a short stroll from the Hash venue, 4 – 9pm every Thursday & Sunday. It’s great for souvenirs, locally made goods, a huge selection of food trucks & a fab Darwin sunset. You can BYO alcoholic beverages to enjoy with your food truck dinner, but no glass on the beach.

Other popular markets – for food trucks, seasonal fruit & veg, & locally made goodies – are in Parap (Saturdays), Nightcliff (Sundays) & Rapid Creek (Sat & Sun).

Our beer supplier, local-grown One Mile Brewery, also have events & cold beers, alcoholic lemonade, ginger beer and cider at their brewery, just down the road from Willing Distillery (for locally produced gin).

The Darwin Railway Club has comedy nights, live music & swing dance nights (!!). Deckchair Cinema has movies under the stars every night (2 movie sessions on Fri & Sat pm), with food, snacks & a bar on-site & a great sunset as the movie starts – geckos, bats & possums will keep you company. Check out the Darwin Entertainment Centre for comedy, music & theatre.

The George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens are great for meandering around & East Point Reserve is awesome for a 5km run/hash or cycle loop/double loop.

We’ve had a great early monsoon (more storms cuming?), & a trip to Litchfield, Kakadu, Katherine and/or Mataranka is highly recommended – the waterfalls & waterholes should still be full & flowing & the landscape green. The scenery & wildlife will blow your mind. Start your planning with NT Find a park.

Closer to Darwin, you can get a taste of the Top End at Berry Springs – visit the Territory Wildlife Park, have a swim at the Berry Springs Nature Park & a few refreshing ales over lunch at the Berry Springs Tavern.

Or head to Crab Claw Island for a chilled lunch – you can drive there (unsealed for the last few kms, but ok in a car) or drop in via helicopter or boat. Mandorah is a short boat ride from Cullen Bay, with a connecting bus to take you to the Cox Country Club for a long lunch.

If you’re up for an adventure, there’s a bunch of helicopter pub tours & fishing trips, scenic flights over Litchfield & Kakadu national parks, Darwin Harbour sunset cruise/dinner options, WW2 tours, walking tours & the hop-on-hop-off bus.

The NT Government public transport and cycling info can help plan your independent travels around Darwin.
